Cal Lutheran defeats Caltech 80-41

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran women’s basketball team used a pair of runs to race past Caltech 80-41 in their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener Friday evening at Gilbert Arena. Up 12-10 with 13:33 left in the first half, CLU went on a 26-4 run over a ten minute span to increase their lead to 36-16.

After going on the offensive to end the first half, CLU stepped up their defense to begin the second. Cal Lutheran held Caltech without a field through the first seven minutes of the second half as they increased their lead to 53-19.

Using 12 different players, the Regals would cruise the rest of the way, finishing the game shooting 51.4 percent from the field while holding Caltech to just 26.7 percent.

Five CLU players went scored in double figures. Jazmyne Porter led the way with 18 points and Rachel Heagy was right behind her with 17 points.

Starla Wright had the games only double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Keeley Anderson had a season-high 11 points and Alex Nelson rounded out the scorers in double figures with 10 points.

Caltech was led by Stephanie Wong, who finished with a game-high 20 points in addition to her six rebounds and six steals. Grace Leishman ended with five points while her teammate Esther Du had seven rebounds.

With the win, Cal Lutheran improves to 5-1 overall and is now 1-0 in the SCIAC. Caltech drops to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the SCIAC.

CLU will hit the court next when they travel to Claremont, Calif. to take on Pomona-Pitzer next Thursday, December 6. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
