SOUTH GATE, Calif. – December started with a splash for the Cal Lutheran women’s swimming and diving team as they competed at the 2012 Finis Invitational last weekend.

CLU athletes earned a number of first place finishes. Mimi Harbach won the 400 Individual Medley (IM) by swimming a 4:43.37, Katie Kochalko won the 200 IM, completing the race in 2:16.01 and Sheyenne Machida won both the one and three-meter diving events.

On the boards for Cal Lutheran, Machidaand Danielle Warmuth went 1-2 on the one-meter with scores of 211.05 and 165.65, respectively. On the three-meter board they repeated as the top two finishers as Machida broke 200-points again with a 200.85 while Warmuth scored a 133.45.

Along with her 400 IM victory, Harbach was third in the 200 free (2:02.84), third in the 500 free (5:17.36), fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:20.36) and sixth in the 100 back (1:09.10).

Kochalko went on to finish fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:35.26), fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:02.92), fifth in the 100 breast (1:13.93) and fifth in the 400 IM (4:49.48).

The CLU relay teams turned in solid performances.  

Brooke Hubbard, Taylor Faust, Kochalkoand Harbach placed second in the 800 Free Relay with a time of 8:17.01. Faust led off the 400 Free Relay, followed by Kelli Miller, Harbach and Kochalko to place third in a time of 3:46.79. Kochalko, Harbach, Karissa Winkler and Faust combined to swim the 200 Free Relay in 1:47.31 to take third.

Harbach, Miller, Kochalko and Faust swam a 4:24.90 400 Medley Relay for fourth and the same team completed the 200 Medley Relay in 2:00.96 for fifth. .

Faust finished fifth in the 100 free (57.82), seventh in the 50 free (26.58) and eighth in the 400 IM (5:06.93). Faust was also ninth in the 200 free with a time of 2:06.68 behind Juliana Rios who hit the wall in 2:05.91. Rios also placed fifth in the 1650 (19:37.57), sixth in the 100 fly (1:04.77), seventh in the 100 free (57.89), seventh in the 500 free (5:31.74).  

Winkler was sixth in the 1650 (19:45.66) and tenth in both the 50 free (27.08) and 500 free (5:36.55). She swam the 200 free in a time of 2:05.84.

Millerwas third in the 100 breast (1:12.98) and 200 breast (2:32.99) while Alvina Wong was sixth in the 200 breast (2:43.13) and tenth in the 100 breast (1:15.94). Miller was fourth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:22.01 and Wongwas right being in eighth with a time of 2:23.92.

Hubbard was the top CLU finisher in the 100 backstroke in 1:07.26 followed by Harbach, Stephanie Yu (1:09.55) and Katrina Brown (1:23.87). Yu went on to finish eighth in the 200 back in 2:30.43.

Cortney Jordan hit the wall in 2:47.42 in the 200 fly to finish seventh. Mary Wakabayashi placed tenth in the 100 fly with a swim of 1:08.78.

Cal Lutheran will open Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition Saturday, Dec. 8 when the teams travel to La Verne to take the blocks against the Leopards beginning at 10:30 a.m.
