(THOUSAND Oaks, Calif. – Dec. 21, 2012) A student and administrator at California Lutheran University received Inspiration Awards for encouraging intellectual and spiritual growth in others while promoting service and leadership.

Lynzi Tarango, a senior global studies major from Fillmore, received the student award during the Dec. 6 Sankta Lucia Festival ceremony. The first-generation college student serves as a peer adviser, leads a small discussion group through Campus Ministry and creates opportunities for people to participate in service projects as an intern for the Community Service Center. She participated in alternative spring break trips to the Dominican Republic and El Salvador, interned for Habitat for Humanity and conducted research on undocumented immigrants attending college in the United States.

“She is a bright force on campus, with her consistently upbeat and positive attitude that makes one feel thankful that she is a part of this community,” Campus Pastor Scott Maxwell-Doherty said during the service. “She is dedicated to making the student experience better for her classmates.”

Amanda Namba, senior coordinator for student involvement and wellness programs, received the staff award. The Thousand Oaks resident holds two CLU degrees, a bachelor’s in liberal studies and master’s in public policy and administration.

“Her manner is graceful, her perception keen, and her capacity to be accountable and hold others equally accountable is worthy of praise,” Maxwell-Doherty said. “She is consistently creative in figuring out ways to connect and communicate with students regarding issues, choices and topics that can be uncomfortable and difficult to talk about.”

A university committee selects the recipients of the annual award. Two anonymous CLU alumni initiated the tradition 33 years ago and provide undisclosed cash awards.
