THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – With temperatures dipping into the 40s and rain showers passing through, the Cal Lutheran women’s tennis team grinded out a 5-0 victory over Hope International Friday afternoon in a match that was shortened due to inclement weather.

Cal Lutheran earned a clean sweep in the doubles matches with the No. 1 pair of Emily Werman and Sarah Baker rebounding from a loss Thursday by defeating Caroline Houston and Sabrina Miller 8-3.

The second match of the day saw the No. 2 pairing of Lindsay Murphy and Carly Mouzes win a back and forth match 8-4 against Jeannette Rodriguez and Jasmin Zaragoza while the No. 3 pairing of Jacqueline Ramsay and Lauren Toohey made quick work of Monique Jimenez and Alyssa Pritchett, defeating them 8-0 and giving CLU the 3-0 lead.

As soon as singles play began so did the rain and the wind. With the conditions worsening, Cal Lutheran would get the match clinching points from Baker and Toohay. Baker won her No. 2 singles match against Rodriguez in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1.

Toohey was just as impressive in her singles match as she did not concede a point in either set, winning 6-0, 6-0 against Jimenez.

All other matches were still going when heavy rains hit around 4:45 p.m. forcing the stoppage in play and the match was finally called at 5:15 p.m.

With the win, Cal Lutheran improves to 2-1 on the year while Hope International drops to 0-2.

The Regals will be back in action tomorrow as they host Redlands in their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) season opener. The first matches are set to get underway at 11:00 a.m. at Poulson Tennis Center.
