LOS ANGELES, Calif. This afternoon the Cal Lutheran women’s water polo team traveled to Division I No. 3 UCLA where they opened the season again the Bruins. CLU was on the losing end of a lopsided 18-3 battle with one of the toughest teams in the country.

UCLA took a 5-0 lead after the first quarter and pushed the advantage to 11-1 at the intermission. Though the Bruins netted six goals to the Regals’ one in the third, the teams exchanged one goal apiece in the final frame.

Jordan Card was the only player to score multiple goals for CLU today, netting two, with Jane Galluzzi picking up where her career was halted in 2011 with the other.

Defensively, Kehau Ai recorded four steals while Adrienne Ingalla and Skylar Vasquez were each credited with a block. Ai also drew an ejection at the offensive end of the pool today as well.

Senior Kylee Tomasetti got the start in front of the cage and tallied four saves and a steal in the first half of action. She gave way to freshman Gina Merry, who made her collegiate debut, turning away four UCLA shots.

Also making her first appearance in Violet and Gold today were Amanda Jones, Tatiana McQuaig and Julia Samarin.

The last time the two teams met was March 8, 2009.

Cal Lutheran (0-1) will be back in the pool next weekend when they travel to the UC Davis Challenge. CLU will face off with the host Aggies on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 8:00 a.m. and follow with a game against CSU Bakersfield at noon.
