CLU completes first day of SCIAC Championships

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The first scoring event at day one of the 2013 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Redlands at Splash! La Mirada saw Ryan Brem earn the only trip to the podium for Cal Lutheran today.

Brem completed his 11-dive list with a 349.35 to place third on the one-meter board, improving his score by three points while clinging to his seed spot from a week ago. Earning the 2013 title was James Stevick who scored a remarkable 476.20 for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps while Jacob Tittl from La Verne was second with a 381.45.

In the pool Conrad Sheffer earned a trip to finals in the 200 Individual Medley (IM) after tying for sixth with Matt Valentinefrom Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the preliminaries this morning with a time of 1:55.77. The championship final saw the CLU junior earn the sixth spot outright by shaving off more than a second to hit the wall in 1:54.68.

Aaron Waters advanced to the consolation final in the 200 IM and placed 15th with a time of 2:00.29, slightly slower than his morning swim of 1:59.91. Zach Kaija was the alternate in the event after going a 2:02.31 in the preliminaries. Jake Hutton (2:04.71) and Mason Hill (2:08.17) also finished in the top-25 in 20th and 25th, respectively.

Junior Tyler Berg sprinted his way into the 50 free consolation final after a 21.60 swim in preliminaries. He came back tonight to swim a 21.62 to finish 14th. Senior Kyle Eckhart was the alternate, placing 17th in the morning in a time of 21.93 and classmate Chase Miller was just out of contention to be an alternate, going a 22.06 for 19th. Another senior, David Sparks (22.14) finished 22nd in prelims.  

To open the swimming portion of the meet, Miller, Eckhart, Sheffer and Berg combined to swim the 200 Free Relay in 1:25.58, eight tenths of a second off the fourth place Occidental team as they hit the wall fifth.

The Kingsmen closed out the meet by placing fourth in the 400 Medley Relay as Waters, Sheffer, Eckhart and Miller combined for a swim of 3:31.01.

Cal Lutheran sits tied for fourth with Occidental as both teams have 115 points after day one. CMS (343) leads the pack followed by UR (220) and PP (130). Rounding out the current standings are ULV (101), WC (73), CIT (67) and CU (36).

Competition will continue Monday, Feb. 18 with preliminaries taking place at 9:00 a.m. followed by championship finals at 4:00 p.m. at Splash! La Mirada.
