REDLANDS, Calif. – The men’s tennis team added to its win total today with a pair of victories on the road. The first win was a 7-2 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) defeat of No. 11 Redlands before downing Vassar (NY), 6-3, in a neutral site, non-conference match up.

The Kingsmen started strong with a 3-0 sweep of doubles against the Bulldogs, but not without a battle. Both the No. 1 team of Nicholas Ballou and Ray Worley and the No. 2 tandem of Alex Nichols and Connor Treacy needed tiebreakers to determine a winner. On the first court Ballou and Worley defeated Gram Leahy and Patrick Lipscomb 9-8 (5-0) while on at court two Nichols and Treacy earned a 9-8 (4-0) victory over Nick Cummins and Connor Hyde.

Thomas Millet and Marcelo Sousa defeated John Brewer and Anish Nanda 8-6 to complete the doubles shutout.

In singles action Ballou and Nichols cruised to 6-3, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-3 victories at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. Millet turned in a second victory against the Bulldogs with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph on court five. Rounding out the singles wins today was Worley who won the first set 6-1 and closed out the match with a 7-6 win in set two.

Treacy was forced to withdraw with an injury on the fourth court, mid-way through the opening set.

The injury forced head coach Mike Gennette to shuffle his rotation for the nightcap with Vassar, but the Kingsmen were unphased.

For the second time today CLU jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage. On the No. 2 doubles court Millet and Sousa teamed up for an 8-1 win over Nick Jasso and Dan Freeman and Ballou and Worley swung past Daniel Cooper and Andrew Guzick by an 8-4 margin. A close 9-8 match on court three went to Nichols and Ian Slater over Josh Kessler and Christian Phelps.

Cal Lutheran got wins at spots No. 1-3. Ballou defeated Guzick 6-3, 6-1 and Worley dropped Freeman 6-1, 6-3. Nichols earned the final win of the evening for the Kingsmen with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Jasso.

Millet, Jacobs and Devon Belcher each battled to three sets, but fell.

Cal Lutheran (10-1) is back at the Poulson Tennis Center for a six-match home stand beginning on Tuesday, March 19 when the Kingsmen host No. 19 Amherst at 2:00 p.m. It will mark the first of five consecutive ranked opponents.
