(THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Aug. 21, 2013) A California Lutheran University student has received a $5,000 physics scholarship.
Morgan Swaidan of Ventura has been selected as a Rossing Physics Scholar – Honorable Mention for the 2013-14 year. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Foundation awards the competitive scholarships to exemplary physics students chosen from the 26 ELCA universities. Thomas D. Rossing, a Luther College alumnus and professor emeritus of physics at Northern Illinois University, established the scholarship fund in 2005.
In recent months, Swaidan has been working on her project “Applications of Gersgorin Disc Theory to the Detection of Hopf Bifurcations,” which was funded by a Darling Summer Research Fellowship at CLU. The physics major has been trying to program a test for recurring natural phenomena that could be applied to differential equations used to mathematically model these patterns.
