Date: Monday, April 23
Time: 12:30pm - 1:30pm
Location: Samuelson Chapel

Description:

The Hermit Songs, a 20th century song cycle composed by Samuel Barber is based on the poetry and musings of Irish monks living between the eighth to thirteenth centuries. Dr. Guy Erwin will lecture on the life of the medieval monk to provide a context from which to consider the lyrics of the songs. Susie Ruth, a voice major, will present a paper on the composer Samuel Barber in preparation for her own performance of the entire song cycle next year . With this background information, the audience will be prepared for the performance of Samuel Barber’s 20th Century musical interpretation of monastic life during the medieval period. Angela Hicks, Mariana Robles-Dalany and Susie Ruth will perform the song cycle for high voice and will be accompanied by Elizabeth Helms and Jessica Helms on the Piano.
