About Chris Kimball

Chris Kimball, Ph.D.
President and Chief Executive Officer, California Lutheran University

An administrative and academic leader with more than 25 years experience in higher education, Chris Kimball is president and chief executive officer of California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. Kimball became the University's seventh president in April 2008 after serving as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for nearly two years. He is currently focused on leading the University through its second half-century, with a commitment to academic excellence, service, and real world learning in support of the University's 2012–2017 Strategic Plan.

Kimball is a historian by training. Having earned a doctorate and a master's degree in history from the University of Chicago, his studies focused on American History, specifically, urban history and the history of sport. He has been published in a variety of journals and has spoken and lectured on topics ranging from the history of baseball and classic ballparks to current trends in higher education. He is co-author of a forthcoming book on historic ballparks in Minnesota. Kimball completed his undergraduate work at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Prior to moving west, Kimball served for six years as Provost and Dean of the College at Augsburg College. He also served on the faculty and held a variety of administrative positions at the Minneapolis institution beginning in 1991. He was also a member of the faculty at University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

As Cal Lutheran's President, Kimball also serves independent higher education both regionally and nationally. He is currently Chair of the Board of the Directors of the Council of Independent Colleges and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities.

Closer to home, he is very active in the local and greater Southern California community. He serves on the boards of a variety of nonprofit, educational and economic organizations including the President's Council of the American Red Cross Ventura County, the Workforce Investment Board of Ventura County, the Conejo/Las Virgenes Futures Foundation, the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center, and the New West Symphony. He is also a member of the Thousand Oaks Rotary Club and shows his Kingsmen and Regals pride as chair of the President's Council for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

A native of Massachusetts, Kimball and his wife, Liz, now live in Thousand Oaks. They have two children, Glenn and Rachel, and are members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Thousand Oaks. In his limited spare time, Kimball follows his beloved Boston Red Sox and reads mystery novels.
