Profile

Graduated from CLU (then CLC) in 1969 as a psychology major and business minor.  Attended the University of Texas at Austin 1969-1975 (with time-off for active duty in USAR at Ft. Bragg). Hired by UCLA Dept of Psychiatry in 1975 to Direct Behavior Analysis and Modification in Communitiy  Mental Health Centers Research Project. Maintained UCLA affilitation as Psychologist at Camarillo State Hospital and Developmental Center until 1996.  Served as membor of Hospital Improvement Team for staff and patients on the Developmentally Disabled units and pschologist for dual diagnosis unit. Appointed Consultant to the Clinical Director for DD Services. Selected to be Psychologist and then Clilnical Director of the UCLA Clinical Research Unit at CSH and DC.  Researach focused on behavioral treatment interventions for most difficult patients in the California Mental Health system.  Also studies on effects of psychotropic medications on behavioirs, positive and negative symptoms.Chair of Research and Human Subjects Committee-8 years When CSH and DC closed, he worked at CA Dept. of Mental Health-Program Planning and Evaluation Section and then as the Consultant to the Medical and Psychology staff at Atascadero State Hospital (part time) for the next 5 years. Served as Administrator and Clinical Director of Las Posada Mental Health Rehabilitation Center and the HOPES Program for homeless mentally ill for the next 8 years and then  part time as a consultant.  Returned to UCLA in 2008 as Senior Psychologist for the Psych REHAB Program at the Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior, UCLA School of Medicine.  Published over 75 books, chapters, articles, and reviews. Has presented papers at over 50 professional meetings.  Provided over 200 consultations and training programs in 45 states and 3 foreign countries to treatment facilties and professional groups. 

Board of Directors:  CLU Alumni Board and member CLU Presidential Selection Committee(1977-81),  Mesa Educational Foundation 7 years -last 2 as president,  Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies- Annual Meeting Program Chair (1986) and Board of Directors -5 years, and Turning Point Foundation- Ventura County (current).  Member American Pscychological Association and  ABCT) for 35+ years.  Licensed CA Clinical Psychologist since 1978.  Served as expert witness/consultant to the US Department of Justice,  California Protection and Advocacy, and the California Attorney Generals office.  Selected as site visitor for Amer. Psych Association clinical Training Programs

Has typically taught 1-4 classes per year for CLU since 1978. 

Raised in Redondo Beach, CA.  Married Julie Menzies (69) Kuehnel in 1969. Two children- Heather and Erin. Home- Camarillo, CA.   Granchildren- Emerson-6, Bailey 2.
