Denver, CO August, 2007 - The CFP® Board awards grant funding to projects that are developing innovative and sustainable methods of bringing the benefits of financial planning to communities not traditionally reached by the financial planning profession.

One of the CFP® Board 2007 grant recipients is California Lutheran University’s California Institute of Finance. The CIF Information Center for Women is an online program initiated by CLU to provide financial planning services free (for basic information) or at minimal cost (for individual counseling) to low- and middle-income women. This program will benefit the underserved women in the financial arena, especially low-income and minority women.

The CIF Information Center is aimed at uplifting these women through online chat, threaded discussions, online educational tutorials, postings of up-to-date information of relevance, and FAQs, with an opportunity for more comprehensive, one-on-one services at a modest fee. Services will include advice and information on debt relief, education funding, wills, etc., as well as more comprehensive planning. The target market is low-income women, caregivers (especially single mothers), underserved minorities, and elderly women with inadequate retirement benefits.

This program at CLU will allow students enrolled in the financial planning programs to become deeply involved in the service. All questions received from the website will also be promptly addressed by instructors by specific discipline (e.g., retirement planning or insurance) for discussion and resolution.

CLU’s project proposal is unique compared to other related programs because of its two-way benefit towards both underserved women and students studying the financial planning field. CLU, being a non-profit educational institution, will use the grant without a self-promoting bias for financial gain.

Commenting on this program, Project Principal Dr. Somnath Basu said, “The students preparing for professional careers will be able to develop an understanding of real-life financial planning problems faced by the targeted community and include elements of community service in their educational endeavors. The students will also be able to help alleviate the problems of financial distress of these underserved women.” Dr. Basu further added, “Students will be supervised by highly qualified faculty from the CLU financial planning courses.”
