Profile
Dr. Haco Hoang holds a Ph.D. in Political Science with an emphasis in International Relations from Boston University. She was a Fulbright Scholar at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore. Hoang has taught courses on international relations, global studies, terrorism, ethnic conflict and genocide, public policy, and women in politics. In addition to teaching at California Lutheran University, she was a policy analyst for Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Councilmember Jose Huizar on education and budget issues. She has also worked as a policy consultant on projects related to female gangs, youth civic engagement, and neighborhood councils for the City of Los Angeles. She is currently the education policy consultant to promote youth environmental activism for L.A. Mayor Villaraigosa's Million Trees Los Angeles initiative. Her policy work and research have been profiled in the Women's Policy Journal of Harvard-Kennedy School of Government, Sage Publications, Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education, KCLU radio, and Ventura County Star. She has also been a speaker at various organizations including the American Association of University Women, World Affairs Council, and Los Angeles United School District. Most recently, she co-wrote an article about the globalization of gangs which focused on efforts in Los Angeles to combat transnational gangs and is researching how civic engagement in low-income communities can promote environmental justice.
