Admission Process

Individuals seeking admission to the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP)* must be formally admitted. General guidelines and materials required of the admission process are:

* Admission to the ATEP is competitive and selective whereby a limited number of students are admitted. Students meeting all selection (application) criteria may be denied admission to this program. Space availability in the formal curriculum is limited to an average of 15 new students each academic year. Students are admitted during the Spring semester and begin in the ATEP the following Fall semester.

Application Materials

Applicants must submit the following materials prior to March 1st:

  • A completed CLU ATEP Application Form: available at the Exercise Science & Sports Medicine Department office, ATEP Director office, or downloaded from the following link: Download Application Form
  • Transcript of academic work completed post high school
  • A Letter of Recommendation
  • A signed copy of the CLU ATEP Technical Standards Form: available at the Exercise Science & Sports Medicine Department office, ATEP Director office, or downloaded from the following link: (Download Technical Standards Form)

Interview

Applicants must complete an in-person Interview with the selection committee. The committee may consist of, but not limited to, the ATEP Director, a CLU Staff Athletic Trainer, a current CLU ATEP Student, and ESSM Faculty member(s). The selection committee reviews all applications and determines the number of students to be accepted into the curriculum to begin in the ATEP the following Fall semester. Decisions regarding acceptance into the program are made by March 31st and applicants are notified by April 5th.

Pre-requisites

The following are pre-requisite courses and minimum standards for admissions to the ATEP. Applicants must demonstrate successful completion (minimum letter grade of C) or enrollment at time of application in pre-requisite courses (must be completed with a minimum letter grade of C). Pre-requisite courses may be considered for transfer from other institutions, please contact the CLU Registrar and the CLU ATEP Director.

  • BIOL 221: Human Anatomy & Physiology
  • BIOL 222: Human Anatomy & Physiology
  • ESSM 200: Introduction to Athletic Training
  • ESSM 206: First-Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • 10 hours of observation under an ATC (NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainer)

Probationary Admissions or Provisional Admissions may be granted to applicants that do not meet all admissions criteria.

  • Probationary/Provisional admissions are considered on a case-by-case basis by the ATEP Director and selection committee.
  • The terms of Probationary/Provisional admissions are established between the student and the ATEP Director and is documented in the student’s application materials. 

Grade Point Average (GPA)

Standard for acceptance into the ATEP requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 to be demonstrated in the applicants academic transcript. ATEP students are also required to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 while enrolled in the ATEP. Admitted applicants will be provided with Retention and Probation Guidelines in the CLU Athletic Training Student Handbook.

Transfer Students

Transfer students who wish to apply for to the CLU ATEP will follow the same published procedures and guidelines. The ATEP Director and selection committee reviews preexisting credits in Athletic Training, First-Aid & CPR, and related sciences and identifies remedial programs when necessary. The transfer student who is admitted to the ATEP will be required to complete all remaining requirements of the ATEP in a minimum of 6 semesters at CLU.

Student-Athletes

CLU Student-Athletes are eligible to apply for admissions into the ATEP following the same process and guidelines. It should be noted that it is not possible to complete the program requirements without full cooperation from the athlete’s coaching staff.

  • No exceptions will be made to the course sequencing if admitted to the program, nor will exceptions be made for meeting the required guidelines for clinical experience.
  • Clinical education requirements during the student-athlete’s competitive-season may be deferred to the non-competitive-season upon approval by the ATEP Director. However, during the non-competitive-season, the student-athlete will not be permitted to participate with his/her respective team if there are conflicts with clinical education requirements. Dual-sport student-athletes will not be able to complete clinical education requirements of the program.

Admitted Applicants

Upon receiving formal admissions to the ATEP, the individual is required to:

  • confirm in writing his/her acceptance/deferral of admissions to the ATEP
  • provide a copy of his/her vaccination records/verification
  • provide a completed physical examination form/verification
