English Department

Programs: CLU & Beyond

Many English programs unaffiliated with the university offer opportunities for CLU students to expand their expertise of writing, reading, and teaching. For more information on these programs and more, visit the English Department bulletin board upstairs in the Humanities building.

Writing Competitions

The Center for Writers at The University of Southern Mississippi
The Center offers $15,000 Excellence Teaching Fellowships and $10,000 Teaching Assistantships, plus full tuition and fee waivers. Recent graduates have won the Whiting Award, the Henfield Award, the Playboy Fiction Contest and the Flannery O'Connor Award. Nine recent graduates have published books since 2003, and several more are publishing books this year. We award master's and doctoral degrees, have a great visitors series, offer workshops in fiction and poetry and nonfiction prose, edit Mississippi Review onlin and in paper, publish a student magazine, and manage (with a little luck) to help our writers become better writers. Apply online at www.centerforwriters.com or contact rief@centerforwriters.com for more information.

The Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics

Since 1989 The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity has sponsored the Prize in Ethics Essay Contest. This annual competition-now in its 20th year-is deisgned to challenge college students to analyze the urgent ethical issues confronting them in today's complex world. Students are encouraged to write thought-provoking personal essays that raise questions, single out issues and are rational arguments for ethical action. First Prize is awarded $5,000.
