New CLU organist to perform free recital

California Lutheran University's new organist said he hopes to expand the college's church music programs as well as serve as a resource for churches throughout Ventura County. Kyle Johnson, 39, took the post of university organist, coordinator of chapel music and lecturer of music at the Thousand Oaks private university in November after three years as director of music and community arts at a Lutheran church in Chicago. The Thousand Oaks private college has formed a quartet of high-achieving students who will perform at events in the community. Wyant Morton is sure there's a niche for innovative choral music in Ventura County. That's why he's creating a professional choral group called Arete, which means pursuing excellence in Greek. Morton, director of choral and vocal studies at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, realizes this area already has several choral groups, including master chorales, but he wants to do something slightly different with Arete, which will have about a dozen singers. Areté Vocal Ensemble, a group of professional artists that will be in residence at CLU, is designed to fill a need in Southern California. Interns play a key role in bringing a venerable event to fruition

This year, more than a dozen students majoring in music, business and international development at colleges from across the country have signed on as interns for the Ojai Music Festival. They did so formally for the first time, using applications created by former intern Hayley Woldseth, who graduated last month from California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks with degrees in music and communications. Wyant Morton receives Excellence in Teaching Award
(THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - May 19, 2009) An accomplished and popular music professor received the President's Excellence in Teaching Award during Honors Convocation at California Lutheran University on May 15. Wyant Morton of Thousand Oaks joined the CLU faculty in 1992 and is currently the chair of the music department and director of choral and vocal activities. He is the third conductor in the history of the CLU Choir, which has performed at Lincoln Center and in England, Norway and Sweden under his direction. Read more...
