Master's Degree with Preliminary Level I Credential

Master's Degree with Clear Level II Education Specialist Credential
For those candidates who completed a Preliminary Level I Education Specialist Teaching Credential at another university, and wish to pursue the Master in Special Education at CLU in combination with completing the Level II credential may do so by completing a total of 41 credits. The 18 units for the Clear Level II credential may be counted toward these 45 credits. After admission to the master's degree program, please see your faculty advisor for a list of electives to complete the master's degree program.
Clear Level II Credential
- Prior to application to the Level II program, teacher must hold a valid Preliminary Level I Education Specialist credential and be teaching in a special education classroom.
- Required courses for the Clear Level II credential, as developed in the Individual Induction Plan (18 units):
a. EDGN 510 Action Research for Practitioners (3)
b. EDSP 540D M/M/S: Positive Learning Environments for Students with Complex Behavioral and Emotional Needs (3)
c. EDSP 540E M/M/S: Assessment, Curriculum, Instruction and Development of the Individual Transition Plan (ITP) (3)
d. EDSP 553A Induction Plan Development (1)
e. EDSP 553B Induction Plan Assessment (2)
f. EDSP 595H M/M/S: Collaborative Consultation, Counseling, and Coordination of Services (3)
g. EDSP 538 Advanced Issues in Mild/Moderate Disabilities (3) (M/M only)
h. EDSP 540B Advanced Issues in Moderate/Severe Disabilities (3) (M/S only) - Required courses for all clear Education Specialist credentials:
a. EDTP 563 Microcomputers in Education (3) (Technology requirement)
b. Health Education requirement
c. Adult, Child, Infant CPR certification - Teachers must complete all Clear Level II requirements and have taught for at least two years while holding a valid Preliminary Level I Education Specialist credential to apply for the Clear Level II Education Specialist credential. Teachers have five years from the date of issuance of the Preliminary Level I credential to complete Clear Level II requirements.
- EDSP 553A and EDSP 553B, the Induction Plan Development and Assessment courses, embed Professional Growth Activities (approved non-university activities) into the course requirements. The Induction Plan Development is developed collaboratively with the student, employer and university. The assessment of the candidate’s progress in completing the plan occurs at the end of the program.

Evening Credential Program/Alternative Certification Program
The University Evening Credential Program enables teacher candidates to complete course work for certification in special education in a supportive environment while working full time within the classroom. University Internship candidates must meet CCTC requirements and apply through the School of Education for a CCTC Education Specialist Internship Credential with approval of their advisor. Candidates will complete credential requirements for the Preliminary Level I Education Specialist Credential in Mild to Moderate (M/M) or Moderate to Severe (M/S) Disabilities.
To qualify for the evening credential program, applicants must:
- Be employed as a full-time teacher in a classroom for students with M/M or M/S disabilities
- Be recommended for the program by their immediate administrative supervisor
