Requirements

Because the teaching credential is granted by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) upon recommendation by Cal Lutheran, the requirements for the teaching credential are a combination of Cal Lutheran requirements and CCTC requirements (requirements are subject to change by the CCTC).

Students at Cal Lutheran may pursue either of two teaching credentials: a Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential, which qualifies the holder to teach in self-contained classrooms (usually grades K-6, but authorization goes to grade 12); and a Preliminary Single Subject Credential, which qualifies the holder to teach in compartmentalized classrooms (usually grades 7-12).

The Foundations coursework is the same for both credentials. The Methods and Student Teaching coursework is different depending on the credential program.

Both credential programs include both coursework and student teaching. Both credential programs have a strong emphasis on effectively teaching the California academic content standards to English learners. Both programs also have a strong linkage between coursework and student teaching.

Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential

Multiple Subject credentials require fulfillment of the Subject-matter Competence Requirement by passage of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) Multiple Subjects, and passage of the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA), as well as other requirements as established by the CCTC.

36 units in education (including student teaching) are required. Master's degree course work may be taken after completion of credential program.

CCTC-approved Subject Matter Programs are available at Cal Lutheran in the following areas: English, Mathematics, Physical Education, Music, Social Science, and (Languages Other Than English) Spanish.
