Certificate of Clearance
All individuals seeking a California teaching or services credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) are required to obtain fingerprint clearance from the California Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. If you have received fingerprint clearance through any other California agencies, employers, other state or government agencies, you are not exempt from this process.
If you currently hold a valid Certificate of Clearance, valid CCTC-issued permit or teaching/services credential, or if a Certificate of Clearance application has been submitted on your behalf by another university, it is not necessary to complete this process. Go to the Look-up and Status Page to print verification when submitting your Cal Lutheran graduate admission application.
Applicants currently residing out-of-state are advised to wait until arriving in California to complete this process.
- Follow Certificate of Clearance "quick tips" instructions (be sure to print three copies of form 41-LS in Item #1)
- Immediately following the successful submission of the online application, an e-mail will be sent containing a confirmation number and a link to the Track Payment web page. Print this page as verification of online application to submit with your admission materials, per the Graduate Admission Checklist included with your packet.
The normal processing time for the fingerprint and character and identification process is one to three days. If an individual must be reviewed by the CCTC's Division of Professional Practice, the review process will take longer. The Look-up and Status Page will indicate that the application is pending additional evaluation. Note that an answer of “Yes” to any character question on the online form may delay your clearance from 12-18 months. Upon admission, if this is your situation, contact your CLU admissions counselor regarding initial enrollment options.
Individuals may view the status of their Certificate of Clearance application on the Look-up and Status Page. Applications for Certificate of Clearance submitted prior to 4:00 p.m. will display on the website the following day at approximately 2:00 p.m. or later.
When fingerprints have cleared, an e-mail will be sent notifying the individual that clearance has been granted. Information can be viewed in 48 hours on the Look-up and Status Page. Notify your Admissions Counselor if you do not receive clearance within 14 working days.
NOTE: The fee paid to the CCTC for the issuance of this clearance is credited toward a future credential fee and will appear as a "Fee Credit" on the site mentioned above.
