CLU Strategic Plan

CLU 2012 builds upon the strengths of existing programs while also identifying new academic enterprises that advance the mission, significance, and reputation of the University.

Seven Strategic Goals


Recruit and retain... a distinguished and diverse faculty and staff who will support the mission and be dedicated to the highest professional standards and service:

  • Provide competitive salaries
  • Improve professional development opportunities
  • Implement housing assistance program
  • Provide sufficient staff to support operations

Recruit and graduate... a well prepared and diverse student body that is academically accomplished and reflective of CLU's mission:

  • Increase enrollment
  • Raise average SAT and GPA scores at entrance
  • Reduce the number of conditional admits
  • Increase retention and graduation rates

Enhance learning... through the ongoing assessment and improvement of curricular and co-curricular programs:

  • Enhance challenge and engagement by integrating the student learning outcomes into all departments/programs
  • Assess all departments/programs on a rotating seven year basis
  • Improve library resources and services
  • Develop and implement a university wide continuous quality improvement process

Invest in facilities... and infrastructure that support and enhance the academic program:

  • Add new academic buildings
  • Classroom and Faculty Office building (Swenson Center)
  • Science Center (Phase II)
  • Arts Center (Phase II)
  • Add new residence hall
  • Add dining facility
  • Adopt a Faculty Housing Plan
  • Renovate existing facilities and complete additional athletic projects
  • Advance campus technology and infrastructure
  • Expand library holdings and electronic collections

Generate the resources... necessary to support quality improvement initiatives:

  • Achieve fundraising goals
  • Execute strategic reallocations
  • Improve operational efficiencies
  • Increase grant funding
  • Optimize enrollment management

Articulate the identity... and enhance the reputation of the University:

  • Continue to articulate our Lutheran heritage
  • Execute the integrated marketing plan
  • Clearly articulate our academic standards and goals
  • Clearly articulate our understanding of ourselves as a scholarly community

Develop leadership capacity... as well as governance structures that foster institutional and program excellence:

  • Clarify the respective governance roles of faculty, administration, and board
  • Implement leadership development program
  • Link strategic priorities to budget allocations
  • Align organizational structures to best support strategic plan implementation
