Shopping Savings
Other than food, most of your shopping expenses will be for things such as clothing and items for your dorm room or apartment, and maybe an occasional gift or two. If you need to purchase these types of items, you will find that discount stores usually have a large inventory at good prices. Some of these stores actually have an entire line of decorative items designed specifically for college students!
There are two big rules to shopping while on a budget:
Don't shop if you don't have money. Avoid the temptation to use credit; it only ends up costing you more in the end.
Bring a list. If you keep your efforts focused, you are less likely to give in to an impulse buy.
Once you have the basic rules taken care of, here are a few tips that can help you stretch those dollars:
Give-aways. Never overlook the value of a give-away. Maybe you know someone who has an extra lamp they aren't using. Spread the word that you're going off to school, and you'll probably find family and friends that have stuff to give away.
Thrift Stores. College is a great time to be adventurous and try new things. How about checking out your local thrift store? With a little patience and imagination, you can put together some trendy outfits and decorate your new place - all while saving a ton of money!
Clearance Racks. Make time to survey the clearance racks at all your favorite stores. With a little patience, you can find great deals. The items may be out of season, but the right season will come again - and you will be ready to go!
