Transportation Savings

Depending upon where you live, transportation expenses can take up a big part of your flexible expenses, but this can also potentially be an area where you have many options for saving some money. Most people immediately think they must drive themselves to campus. This can be expensive, with gas, insurance and upkeep for the car. Consider alternative transportation methods such as:

  • Public transportation. Depending upon the community in which your campus is located there may be a public transportation system that serves the community and campus. Often times colleges and universities will partner with the public transportation provider and to provide discounted or free passes.

  • Biking. Get some exercise and save some money! If you like to bike, and live close to campus, biking may be a good option - but make sure that you have a safe path and wear appropriate safety gear. And once you get to campus, make sure there is an appropriate secure and safe place to store your bike.

  • Car-pooling. Sharing rides with friends or roommates is another way to save on transportation costs. If you know someone with a similar schedule, you can make the ride together and split the cost. Check with your campus about car pool permits and special parking spots on campuses for carpoolers.
