The California Wildlife Center actively rescues and rehabilitates native wildlife.The Center also implements regular education and conservation programs that help improve the relationship between humans and wildlife.Our mission is to assist sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife, to accept responsibility for these creatures and ensure that each is treated humanely and receives the highest level of rehabilitative care for release back into a wild, free-ranging state, and to promote protection of wild habitat and the environment through educational programs and conservation efforts.Volunteers can assist in the animal hospital, located in Calabasas, by cleaning cages and doing laundry, as well as feeding animals (especially babies).Volunteers can also participate in marine animal rescue by evaluating and picking up the marine mammals to be treated.The office could use clerical workers and volunteers can also help through their outreach program which would involve talking to the public at events centered around environmental education and involvement. Must be aware of monthly time requirements (6 months minimum, one 4-hour shift per week) if attend Basic Training class. Working in the office or for fund raising/outreach programs does not require the time commitment. All CWC volunteers must maintain a current membership to the organization. Memberships are renewed annually.

Ride On teaches horseback riding to children and adults with physical and mental disabilities.Founded in 1994, Ride On is a 501 (C)(3) not-for-profit corporation.They are a NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association) Premier accredited center and they serve over 125 riders each week at two ranches in Los Angles and Ventura County.Volunteers that have not been through volunteer training can help with barn maintenance or horse grooming.Volunteers that choose to go through volunteer training (1 Saturday from 8:30-11:30am) can be involved with the horseback riding. Usually, volunteers are asked to volunteer regularly if they go through the training so the program can count on having enough trained people to facilitate weekly lessons witht he kids.

The Braille Institute has been helping people with vision loss for more than 75 years and services include library services, low vision rehabilitation services, child development service, youth & career services, educational programs, universal media services, the Braille Challenge, and much more. Volunteers can participate by helping in the library, the classroom, outdoor activities, and even teaching in a classroom setting. Training for volunteers depends on the program with which they choose to work. Minimum age to volunteer is 16 years old and requires a 20 hour commitment as there is some training involved.

Literacy opens doors to better jobs, educational opportunities and new horizons for individuals and their families. The Oxnard Public Library Literacy Outreach Program, funded in part by a grant through the California Library Services Act, provides adults with free and highly-personalized English language instruction in reading and writing by trained volunteer tutors. RFB&D aims to create opportunities for individual success by providing, and promoting the effective use of, accessible educational materials. Volunteers can serve as readers who narrate books and describe any visual elements. Directors are also needed to guide the reader by operating recording equipment and making corrections to recorded material. Bookmarkers make a “pencil path” through books to be recorded to guide readers through the sequence of charts, illustrations, and footnotes. Educational Outreach Volunteers spread the word about RFB&D’s services. Other opportunities include fundraising, public relations, orientation leaders, speakers’ bureau presenters and office support.

Student volunteers are needed for Relay for Life which is held on Aug. 28th-29th from Sat. 10am-Sun.10am for the Conejo Valley. Relay for life is an overnight event designed to celebrate cancer survivors and raise money for research and other programs. Teams take turns walking or running laps and each team tries to keep at least one team on the track at all times. Interface is a comprehensive, integrated services agency providing intervention, counseling, prevention, education, shelter and treatment services that balance the economies of scale present in a larger organization with the focused expertise of smaller cause specific work groups and teams typical of a smaller single-focus organization. Volunteer can serve in the 2-1-1 call center which takes social service calls. They can also help with the domestic violence shelter or support groups. Volunteers can work with youth services to counsel teens on any issues they may have as well as work with children’s resources, working somewhat like a case manager. Volunteers are also needed for mental health counseling and for the disaster response call center.

Serving the community since 1975, Senior Concerns is a private, non-profit organization, dedicated to raising funds and developing and administering quality-of-life programs for seniors with special needs. Our programs aim to keep families together and seniors active and in their homes for as long as possible, by offering affordable options which support persons in later life. Senior Concerns serves Ventura and western Los Angeles counties, special-need seniors, families, health professionals, caregivers and the community at large. Volunteers have the opportunity to entertain residents or give presentations as well as participate in crafts and dancing. Volunteers are also needed to participate in Meals on Wheels and help out in the thrift store. Big Brothers Big Sisters are foremost, friends to children; they share everyday activities, expand horizons, and experience the joy in even the simplest events. Within those little moments lies the big magic hat a Big Brother or Big Sister brings to the life of a young person. Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is something that almost anyone can do. The only requirement is a willingness to make a new friend and a desire to share some fun with a young person. Our volunteers consistently say that being part of BBBS match is as enjoyable and fulfilling for them as it is for their Littles. BBBS will work with a volunteer’s interest (they have had students that have worked with kids in relations to criminal justice, human relations, and much more). Volunteers must go through a 3 hours training session. Volunteers can also help for 1 day special events. BBBS has activities for volunteers year-round. POWER 4 Youth matches adult volunteers with youth for one-on-one tutoring/mentoring at supervised sites in Long Beach, CA. Middle and high school teens meet weekly at local church sites (though it is not a church program) with their adult, with no cost to either participant. Volunteer tutor/mentors provide basic academic support and encouragement while mentoring the youth in the self-development. POWER 4 Youth provides training and support to all volunteers. Ride On teaches horseback riding to children and adults with physical and mental disabilities. Founded in 1994, Ride On is a 501 (C)(3) not-for-profit corporation. They are a NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association) Premier accredited center and they serve over 125 riders each week at two ranches in Los Angles and Ventura County. Volunteers that have not been through volunteer training can help with barn maintenance or horse grooming. Volunteers that choose to go through volunteer training (1 Saturday from 8:30-11:30am) can be involved with the horseback riding. Usually, volunteers are asked to volunteer regularly if they go through the training so the program can count on having enough trained people to facilitate weekly lessons witht he kids.

School on Wheels is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization whose sole focus is educational assistance to homeless children who live in shelters, motels, cars and on the street. Their goal is to find a tutor for every homeless child. Volunteers would be matched with K-12 aged children and meet with them 1-on-1 once a week. Volunteers will go through a 2 hour orientation which includes volunteer training in addition to a 3-hour hands on training segment. Volunteers also need to complete a background check.
