Cable TV Service
Bringing a TV to campus? Here's what you need to know.
Cable TV service is provided for every suite in student housing throughout campus. We partner with Time Warner digital cable for all TV services. As of 2014, all analog cable channels have been switched over to digital format.
All TVs on campus must contain a QAM digital tuner to receive channels. Many new televisions today are QAM compliant, however, even some new TVs may not contain a QAM tuner. Check the specifications in your owner's manual or visit the manufacturer's website to see if your TV model has a QAM digital tuner.
Please Note: be advised that some lower priced TVs may come with a lower quality QAM tuner that may not be able to receive all of the channels. We've found this to be true on certain models of bargain brands such as Apex, Dynex, and Sylvania.
How do I know if my TV has a digital QAM tuner?
Here's an example of what the manual/website may say of the TV has a QAM tuner: "Built in digital tuner (ATSC/ Clear QAM)" or "NTSC/QAM."
Note: "digital tuner" does not necessarily mean QAM.
Televisions that, depending on the model, are not likely to have a QAM tuner: Apex, Dynex, Sharp, RCA, Sylvania.
What if my TV does not have a digital QAM tuner?
You can purchase a converter tuner such as the Channel Master CM-7001. This model is used on campus in various facilities and seems to work well. You can check out the CM-7001 here. Unfortunately, even with a CM-7001 converter, there is no guarantee that it will work. We highly recommend purchasing a TV with a built-in QAM digital tuner.
Note: DAC (digital analog converter) boxes that convert TV signal coming through an antenna will not work with Time Warner digital cable.
