About Us

The Purpose of Upward Bound is to:

Increase the rate at which high school graduates pursue post secondary education, aswell as increase competency in core subject matter; this includes English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and Foreign Language. Encourage more students to pursue programs that lead to careers in math and science, gain parental support in social, emotional, and academic growth of their children.

Who is eligible to Participate in Upward Bound

  1. To be eligible for the Upward Bound Program at California Lutheran University students must attend one of the following Ventura County Schools:
    • Channel Islands High School Oxnard, California
    • Hueneme High School Oxnard, California
    • Oxnard High School, Oxnard, California
    • Pacifica High School, Oxnard, California
    • Rio Mesa High School, Oxnard, California
  2. Two-thirds (2/3) of the participants are required to be both low-income and first-generation college bound students. The annual low-income levels are provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
  3. One-third (1/3) of the participants can be either low-income or first generation college bound students. Participants must demonstrate a need for academic support, as determined by theUBP, in order to successfully pursue a program of education beyond high school.
  4. At the time of initial selection, participants must have completed the eighth grade but not entered the twelfth grade. They must be at least 13 years old but not older than 19.
  5. Participants must be citizens or legal residents of the United States.
