Conversations: Korean Oral Histories and Folk Music

Conversations include Korean Oral Histories and Folk Music, a cultural exploration of a post WWII society undergoing change. An oral history is read by Sunyoung Park, Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychology at Cal Lutheran in the Master of Science in Clinical Psychology program and undergraduate student Courtney Buchanan and her grandmother, Katie Lee.

The Folk music is performed by Keum Hwa Cha, D.M.A. and accompanied on the piano by Soon Kim, both in the Music Department at Cal Lutheran. Don Warrick is the narrator. This program premiered on Sunday, Sept. 13, National Grandparents Day, a day to honor our ancestors. This prerecorded film and the companion film Understanding 20th Century Korean History (which premiered on Aug. 29) are available on demand at the link below.

Conversations is part of a series of events associated with the Ventura County One County, One Book (OCOB) community book read: The Island of Sea Women, by Lisa See. The historical novel is set on the Island of Jeju, Korea, and follows two girls as they begin working in the sea with their village’s all female diving collective. The story unfolds over decades and depicts what happens to their friendship during turbulent and ever-changing times between 1938 and 2008.
