The story of the birth of Christ has a protagonist that makes all stories of motherhood pale by comparison – the faithful and seemingly fearless servant of God, Mary. Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox traditions all have images of this young Jewish woman who was declared by the archangel Gabriel to be “highly favored” in God's sight.

Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork of men working as day laborers in a casual street-corner market in New York, Dr. Carolyn Pinedo Turnovsky will show how these workers developed a self-concept through their work experience and illustrate the active role they played in shaping their economic and social experiences.

"World War II Activist Per Anger, Elizabeth Skoglund

Biographer Elizabeth Skoglund will share the story of Per Anger, fellow World War II activist of Raoul Wallenberg and Swedish Ambassador to Canada. Despite not sharing Wallenberg’s high profile, Anger was an important participant in saving tens of thousands of Jews during the Holocaust. Hear his amazing story and see never-before-seen photos from his personal collection.

Artists and Speakers Series featuring Miss California
Jacquelynne Fontaine, soprano

Samuelson Chapel

Last July, Jacquelynne Fontaine was named Miss California and earned the right to compete in the 2007 Miss America Pageant which was held in Las Vegas in January. There, she won the talent portion of the competition during three days of preliminaries and was one of the top 10 semifinalists the night of the pageant.
