The Instruments of Jazz

In this course, we will examine the different styles and practitioners of jazz instruments since the genre’s beginnings on record in 1917. Each week we will focus on a different family of instruments, showing similarities and differences in musical styles, execution and eras. Topics will include trumpets, saxophones, trombones and lower brass, woodwinds, strings, piano and keyboards, drums and percussion, and vocalists. Enrollment in Part 1 is NOT required for this course.

Cary Ginell is a Grammy-nominated writer and author of 12 books on American music. After a 30-year career in radio, he has spent the last 20 years as a public speaker, talking about music in classrooms, at conferences and on cruise ships. Ginell brings a lifelong passion for the recording industry to his work and is one of the world’s foremost authorities on his specialty, Western swing. Ginell previously served as president of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections, an international organization of music scholars and world-renowned institutions.

The course is 4 weeks and will take place July 28, August 4, 11 and 18.

Registration is required by 3 p.m. Friday, July 23. Cost is $25 per course or bundle all 6 Summer Session 2 courses for $100. Courses are limited to those age 50 and older.

The Fifty and Better program was designed to offer university-level courses (no tests, no homework) taught by experts in the field, and to host social engagement activities for individuals age 50 and older.
