Presidential Inauguration Celebration: John R. Sladek, Ph.D.

Dr. John R. Sladek has chosen words by William Shakespeare, “Dreaming on Things To Come,” as the theme of his inauguration as the sixth president of California Lutheran University. Please join us as we install Dr. Sladek as president of CLU, celebrate the University’s achievements, and dream on the remarkable things that are yet to come.

Tuesday - Engaging the World
Student Community Service Projects
Participants chose from a Habitat for Humanity project in Oxnard or a National Parks Service project along the Pacific Coast Highway. An exhibit of other CLU service project accomplishments was on display in the Ahmanson Science Center.

Wednesday - Enlivening the Spirit

Thursday - Enlightening the Mind
Faith and Reason Symposium
Samuel Thomas, M.Div., CLU Instructor in Religion, spoke on the Catholic understanding of higher education; and Mark Tranvik, Associate Professor of Religion and Director of the Lilly Vocation Program, Augsburg College, spoke on the Lutheran understanding of higher education.

Entrepreneurship in the Arts Symposium
A panel of industry professionals explored how strategic partnerships, risk taking and originality can be channeled into success in the creative arts.

Advances in Neuroscience Symposium
Participants included four of President Sladek's former students: Henry Khachaturian, Ph.D., Office of the Director, National Institute of Health - "Overview of Neuroscience"; Gloria E. Hoffman, Ph.D., Professor, University of Maryland School of Medicine - "Unraveling the Brain's Control of Reproductive Cycles: Anatomists know where it's at!"; Thomas H. McNeill, Ph.D., Professor, USC Keck School of Medicine - Translating Basic Research into Clinical Practice: The role of interdisciplinary team science"; and Kathy Steece-Collier, Ph.D., Associate Professor, University of Cincinnati School of Medicine - "Understanding Therapy-Mediated Dyskinesias in Parkinson's Disease."

“A Celebration of the Arts” featured command performances of drama, dance and music by students, faculty and special guests.
