First Year Experience

Street Meeting with Mark Wild

Second in the series for the Spring First Year Experience (FYE), Mark Wild brings an historian’s viewpoint to the issues depicted in the FYE text Southland by Nina Revoyr. In her visit on Feb. 27, Revoyr reflected on the inner landscape of the people living in the Crenshaw District from mid-20th century to the 1990s. In this presentation, Wild will explore the development of Los Angeles through the “meetings” of diverse Angelenos.

An associate professor at Cal State University Los Angeles, Wild focuses on the urban histories of the modern United States. His specific area of research is the history of Los Angeles. In his first book, Street Meeting (2008), he explores such relationships among different ethnic communities in early 20th century Los Angeles. Currently, he is working on a new project examining efforts by Protestant missionaries to create more "city-friendly" churches after World War II.

Admission is free.
