'Museums Are Not Neutral' Workshop

The art exhibit Acts of Resistance features some of Meleko Mokgosi’s most powerful pieces – a critical intervention of museum didactic labels. In this work he addresses cultural biases that subtly infiltrate seemingly innocuous language, making obvious what is a growing consideration in museum studies: that museums are not neutral. These pieces offer a starting point for dialogue and movement.

This open roundtable discussion will begin with a short presentation on the themes of colonial roots in museum spaces, and particularly how this ongoing issue perpetuates stereotypes with regard to black bodies in the African diaspora. All are welcome and encouraged to engage in discussion if they wish, but participation is not required to attend.

Please RSVP to rtschmid@callutheran.edu or 805-493-3697 by Feb. 22 (so we can order enough chairs).
