Schools as Sanctuary, Educators as Allies: Supporting Newcomer Students in U.S. Classrooms

The California Reading and Literature Project at California Lutheran University would like to invite participants to join guest speaker Lauren Markham, award-winning author and educator, as she discusses how schools can serve as safe havens for newcomer students and the role teachers must play in both supporting these students and offering opportunities for student leadership and student voices.

By drawing links between the violence at the U.S. border and the inequities in U.S. classrooms, this presentation will frame education as a critical social-justice arena in dire need of transformation in order to equitably serve immigrants and English language learners.

Markham is writer based in Berkeley, California. Her essays and journalism have appeared in outlets such as The New York Times, The Guardian, Harper’s, The Atlantic, Mother Jones and VQR, where she is a contributing editor. She has spent the past 15 years working at the intersection of immigration and education, and is a part-time administrator at a high school in Oakland, California.

Her 2017 book, The Far Away Brothers: Two Young Migrants and the Making of an American Life, chronicles the experiences of twin teenagers from El Salvador who grew up in the wake of the country’s civil war and in tandem with the rise of local gangs, which forced them to flee to the United States for safety. The book examines the violence of borders, the long shadow of U.S. foreign policy in Central America, the big business of immigration detention and the exclusion young immigrants face in U.S. communities and schools.
