Landmarks, History and Stories of Wilshire Boulevard

Fifty and Better Mid-Summer Lectures

Landmarks, History and Stories of Wilshire Boulevard

In July 2020, the Los Angeles Times published an article by Sharon Boorstin about an architectural driving tour of Wilshire Boulevard from MacArthur Park to Fairfax Boulevard. Her research uncovered more fascinating information than she could squeeze into a thousand words and compelled her to explore Wilshire from Fairfax all the way west to the ocean. Join her for a presentation covering the architecture, history and fascinating stories about the street once known as “The Fifth Avenue” of Los Angeles. Remember Bullock’s Wilshire? The Ambassador Hotel? Bring your own memories of Wilshire Boulevard to share.

Boorstin is a contributing writer for the Los Angeles Times, specializing in lifestyle and travel. In 2019, she won Visit California’s Eureka Award for Best Newspaper Travel Article. She was the restaurant critic for the (late) Los Angeles Herald-Examiner in the 1970s and '80s, and in the '90s she edited the annual Gayot guidebooks for Los Angeles and other cities. She also has written for magazines including Bon Appetit, Smithsonian and Town & Country Travel.

Registration is required. Cost is $8.

Fifty and Better was designed to offer university-level courses (no tests, no homework) taught by experts in the field and to host social engagement activities to individuals age 50 and older in our community.
