Economic Challenges for Creating a Sustainable Economy (Parts 1 and 2)

Fifty and Better Fall Session

Economic Challenges for Creating a Sustainable Economy (Parts 1 and 2)

Every possible evidence around tells us that humanity is one interrelated entity, and yet our actions in many ways deny such important observations. One of the biggest misconceptions is that the world has always been the same. In the first 1000 years A.D. the world GDP only grew by 13%. Some of the challenges ahead of us are existential and threaten the continuation of human and other forms of lives on earth. The root causes of their emergence and the threat to our lives are related to our way of life and prevailing economic system. This two-part lecture looks at a number of issues which will enable us to understand what has happened over the last 50 years. We will use the lesson from the ongoing pandemic and the war between Russia and Ukraine to provide examples and context. We will discuss some of the choices we have to create a sustainable economy and examine if our current economic system can survive.
