Illustrated Lecture: An Ancient Athletic Trophy

Awarding a trophy cup to the winner of an athletic contest dates back centuries. The ancient Greeks, for example, presented their athletes decorated vases for all sorts of competitions. In his talk, Dr. Ernst F. Tonsing will examine one of these vases – a 2,500 year-old stemmed bell krator from the CLU art collection, compare it with other ceramic vases of the time, and ponder the social context and athletic competition for which it was made.

Dr. Tonsing, a professor emeritus of New Testament and Greek at CLU, has lectured and published on various topics of the ancient world, including an article on Alexander the Great, “From Prince to Demi-God: The Formation and Evolution of Alexander’s Portrait.”

Admission is free. Light refreshments will be served
