Artists and Speakers Series: The Music and Dances of Spain
Clarita and the Arte Flamenco Dance Theatre
“The Music and Dances of Spain” is a richly textured program portraying the variety of dance found throughout the country’s many regions. Rarely seen Spanish classical dances intermixed with Zarzuelas (Spanish light operas), bold athletic regional folk dances of the North influenced by France, Germany and Ireland and, of course, the fiery passion of traditional flamenco come together in this program.
Clarita, the first American flamenco dancer to perform for former Spanish president Felipe Gonzales, was the featured dancer at “El Arenal,” Sevilla’s most popular tablao (flamenco club). Under the mentorship of Sevilla’s premier male dancer Curro Velez, Clarita has performed with some of the most renowned flamenco artists of our day. She created the 15-member Arte Flamenco Dance Theatre in 1990.
