World AIDS Day Keynote Event

CLU is proud to host Ventura County's commemoration of World AIDS Day 2006. Daisy Dharmaraj, M.D., AIDS Desk, Chennai, India, and Nina Harawa, M.P.H., Ph.D., Charles R.Drew University of Medicine and Science will discuss local and global challenges of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Dr. Dharmaraj will address the impact of HIV/AIDS in India. In particular, she will discuss how sex, religion and social caste are shaping the illness experiences and stigma of those living with HIV/AIDS in Chennai.

Dr. Harawa, an epidemiologist and research faculty member, will discuss the local impact of HIV/AIDS in Ventura and L.A. counties, with a special focus on ethnicity-based health disparities, such as African-Americans' experiences of HIV/AIDS stigma and the impact of the disease in their communities.

We will conclude by inviting questions from the audience. This event will be followed by a reception in the Kwan Fong Gallery, a candlelight vigil and walking tour of our three exhibits of the AIDS Memorial Quilt.
