Eighth Annual Professional Development School Conference

Saturday Keynote Speaker

Graduate School of Education Distinguished Educator in Residence Trudy T. Arriaga, Ed.D., served as the first female superintendent of the Ventura Unified School District for 14 years. Her career in education spanned many roles including, bilingual paraeducator, teacher, assistant principal, principal, director and superintendent. Her talk will focus on core values that ensure equity, access, and opportunity for every child and their family.

The Program

Friday, 3/22, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., will consist of visits to Sumac Elementary School and CHIME Charter School. CHIME is a full inclusion school and partner of California State University Northridge providing fieldwork experiences for candidates becoming both general education and special education teachers. Sumac is a dual immersion (English-Spanish) school and the PDS partner of Pepperdine University providing fieldwork experiences for candidates becoming elementary teachers. The morning will begin with a light breakfast and end with a debrief session to discuss best practices and answer questions (lunch provided).

Saturday, 3/23, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., will be a full-day conference with presentations and speakers with focus on cultural proficiency and equity partnerships between universities and P-12 schools, strategies for mentoring teacher candidates, co-teaching strategies, strategies for Common Core and how cooperating teachers and teacher candidates can better use their partnership to improve P-12 student learning outcomes. Light breakfast and luncheon included.
