I.   TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS

Technology Requirements (face to face courses):

 

Cal Lutheran utilizes Blackboard to enhance course learning and achieve the designated student learning outcomes.  Technology requirements for the Blackboard Learn and Collaborate are as follow:

  • Check your OS and Java version here, and enter into the Configuration Room to make sure you can get into Blackboard Collaborate or enter the following in your browser:

  • Minimum computer requirements:
    • Memory: 4 GB RAM or higher
    • Hard Drive: 10% or more free space on your hard drive
  • Broadband connection highly recommended – DSL or above
  • Program(s) that can open Microsoft Office documents and PDFs (e.g. .doc, docx, .ppt, .pptx, .pdf, etc.)

 

Technology Requirements (Online Courses):

  1. If you have a Windows operating system
    1. Browser: Firefox or Chrome
    2. Java 7 or Java 8
  2. If you have a Mac OS or Ubuntu
    1. Only use Firefox
    2. Oracle Java 7
  3. Linux
    1. Only use Firefox
    2. Java 7 or Java 8
  4. Blackboard Collaborate Launcher (can download when you first attempt join a Collaborate room in your Blackboard course)
  5. 256 MB RAM
  6. 20 MB free disk space
  7. Internet Access - 28.8 kbps speed or above (Broadband connection highly recommended)
  8. Soundcard
  9. A headset with microphone/headphones
  10. Program(s) that can open .doc, .ppt, and .pdf documents
  11. Optional:
    1. Webcam (recommended)
    2. Blackboard Learn App
      1. Download from your devices’ app store, select California Lutheran University as the school and sign in via myCLU

Technology Requirements (Blended Courses):

  1. Computer
  2. If you need or want portable hardware, you can check out a laptop or iPad at the library for the entire semester.
    1. A first-generation iPad is sufficient for participating in this course.
  3. To watch Pre-recorded lectures
    1. Windows or Mac operating systems
    2. Applications Microsoft Silverlight or Windows Media Player
    3. Bandwidth
      1. 50Kbps: Audio-only recording
      2. 300Kbps: Recording consisting of screen capture, audio, and video
  • 500Kbps: Recordings with multiple video streams
  1. Speakers or headphones
  1. To access the course site
    1. Firefox browser (usually the best, do NOT use Internet Explorer)
    2. Java 7 (Mac OS) or Java 8 (Windows or Linux)
  2. Optional: Blackboard Learn App
