Scholarship Information:

  • Typically the CLU Guarantee Scholarship replaces* any Academic Scholarship or Presidential Scholarship the student was awarded. For PROS students, it does not replace the Professionals Grant.
  • Cal Lutheran reserves the right to evaluate each student on an individual basis regarding scholarship eligibility.
  • When receiving the CLU Guarantee Scholarship after a Financial Aid Award is created, the Financial Aid Award may change based on institutional, state, and federal guidelines regarding eligibility.
  • Students will be reviewed for additional institutional, state, and federal aid based on FAFSA information.
  • For traditional undergraduates, the scholarship is calculated as the difference between the Cost of Attendance (COA) at Cal Lutheran for a full-time, residential student and the average COA for a full-time, residential student at UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and UCSD. Calculating the CLU Guarantee Scholarship for Traditional Undergraduate Students. For PROS students, the scholarship is calculated based on the Traditional Undergraduate cost per unit after the CLU Guarantee.
  • The scholarship amount changes every year as the COA changes at these institutions. This means the amount can go up and it can go down. Should the CLU Guarantee Scholarship amount decrease in any year, returning students will continue to receive the scholarship at the higher rate from the previous year.
  • The scholarship is renewable for subsequent years at Cal Lutheran provided the student maintains Satisfactory Academic Progress. Freshmen may receive the scholarship for up to a maximum of 4 years. Transfer students may receive the scholarship for up to a maximum of 2 years, depending on grade level at time of enrollment.
  • Traditional and PROS students must be enrolled in at least 12 units per term in order to receive the CLU Guarantee Scholarship.

*Students cannot receive both an Academic Scholarship (or Presidential Scholarship) and a CLU Guarantee Scholarship at the same time. If a student was awarded an Academic Scholarship (or Presidential Scholarship) prior to being determined eligible for the CLU Guarantee, they will be given the option to choose one of the two scholarships they would like use while attending CLU. The student must retain the scholarship they choose at that time (Academic/Presidential or CLU Guarantee) and may not change their award decision after they begin attending CLU.

Calculating the CLU Guarantee Scholarship for Traditional Undergraduates:

The CLU Guarantee Scholarship amount is calculated using an average of the in-state, residential Cost of Attendance (COA) at the five UC institutions. This average is then subtracted from the on-campus COA at Cal Lutheran, resulting in the scholarship amount.

COA includes tuition, fees, room, board, books, and other expenses a family might accrue while the student is at college such as transportation and personal expenses. It should not be confused with Direct Costs which are those costs paid directly to the institution: usually tuition, room, board, and fees.

How Much is the Scholarship?

The CLU Guarantee Scholarship for each year is equal to the difference between the average COA of the five UC schools included in the program, from the COA at Cal Lutheran.

  • The average COA at the five UC institutions included in this program for 2015 - 2016 is: $34,218.
  • The COA at Cal Lutheran is $57,641.
  • The CLU Guarantee Scholarship for 2015-2016 is equal to $23,424. Here's how it's calculated: $57,641 – $34,218 = $23,424.

Why is Cal Lutheran offering this scholarship?

Cal Lutheran is offering this program for a number of reasons. First, we recognize that the increasing costs of college at both public and private institutions makes it difficult for many students to receive a high quality education. We want to ensure that as many students as possible have access to a high quality education. In addition, we want to encourage more students to look at all of the higher education options available to them.

Cal Lutheran recognizes the quality education that a student can receive at UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and UCSD. However, we understand that some students are looking for smaller class sizes and personal attention from faculty, but do not think they can afford a private school. The purpose of the CLU Guarantee Scholarship is to help make a private school education more of a reality for many students.

Finally, Cal Lutheran firmly believes in the importance of providing opportunity and access to a private school education for ALL students.
