Moving from 'Hispanic-Serving' to Culturally Sustaining: A Research-based Approach

In this lecture, Marcos Pizarro offers reflections and research findings to aid Cal Lutheran, now a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, in pursuit of its strategic priority of greater inclusion. A former schoolteacher and current chair of Mexican-American studies at San Jose State University, Pizarro develops and evaluates interventions to help Chicanx and Latinx students to succeed at various levels of schooling and to create social and racial justice in their communities.

Pizarro joined San Jose State University in 1999 and is now the faculty-in-residence for its Chicanx-Latinx Student Success Center, which works to enhance Latinx student engagement and academic success. In 2005, he published Chicanas and Chicanos in School, a book exploring the relationship between the identities of Chicanx students and their academic performance.

Currently, Pizarro is the co-coordinator of the Institute for Teachers of Color Committed to Racial Justice, which provides professional development for teachers. He holds a bachelor’s degree in urban studies from Stanford University and a PhD from UCLA's Graduate School of Education.

Admission is free.
