Fall 2020 Campus Update
Dear Cal Lutheran Students, Faculty and Staff
As you may be aware, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) recently released its COVID-19 guidelines for colleges and universities. Our previously communicated plan to deliver all courses virtually for the start of the Fall Semester was more conservative than the guidance provided by CDPH.
We will continue to monitor the situation and follow local and state public health guidelines. We understand that indoor face-to-face lectures cannot happen to start the fall, but should face-to-face instruction become feasible later in the fall we will adapt our course delivery model and keep you informed every step of the way.
We also understand that outdoor lectures and indoor “specialized” classes (science labs, art studios, etc.) are permitted, and we will be working with local health officials to deliver some classes in those formats in accordance with our Social Compact.
Student Housing and Food Services
We are moving forward with plans to welcome a limited number of students into our residence halls this fall under our Low Density Housing Plan. Food service will be available at both Ullman Dining and Starbucks at Jack’s, including carry-out and outdoor-dining options.
Employees and Visitors
To support the additional students on the campuses, limited staff will be asked to return to their place of work on August 24; those individuals will be notified by the appropriate supervisor. In accordance with the Cal Lutheran Visitor Policy, we will continue to limit visitors to our campuses to select individuals, such as invited parents.
Cal Lutheran Compact
With a limited number of students, staff and faculty returning to the campuses in the coming weeks, please be reminded that every member of the Cal Lutheran community is called upon to sign our Compact to ensure we collectively commit to important public health protocols that impact all of us.
Student Programming and Meetings
At this time, all Student Life programming, will be a mix of mostly virtual along with some small-scale programs held outdoors. All meetings with staff, faculty, academic advisors, financial aid officers and others will continue in a virtual format. We look forward to offering more in-person opportunities as soon as guidelines permit.
Many of our buildings will remain closed, accessible only by card swipe for essential staff. In addition to the specialized classes mentioned above, we are working with local health officials to open some indoor spaces for informal, socially distanced, student study areas.
We are also planning to create covered outdoor spaces on the Thousand Oaks Campus—incorporating comfortable seating, connectivity ports, enhanced wifi access, and social distancing measures—to provide both residential and commuter students with safer study areas throughout campus. We will share more details as we finalize these plans in conjunction with local public health officials.
In this ever-evolving situation, much uncertainty remains. For questions regarding plans for the Fall Semester, please contact COVIDquestions@CalLutheran.edu. To request assistance in setting up spaces consistent with CLU policy and State guidance, please contact COVID-operations@CalLutheran.edu.
As colleges and universities around the country—in fact, the world—are called upon to reimagine higher education this fall, know that we are working diligently to ensure the health of everyone in our Cal Lutheran community, while finding new ways to build a meaningful educational and social experience this fall. We thank you for your ongoing patience and support, as we rise to this challenge with a sense of purpose and a spirit of resilience.
