Academic Information for Students
Dear Cal Lutheran Students,
We are eager to welcome you and launch the fall semester in less than two weeks! Our faculty have been working hard to create new ways to engage you virtually in a high quality Cal Lutheran academic experience. Below are some of the opportunities available this semester, including some in-person experiences that are now allowed.
Logging Into Your Classes
Classes begin the week of August 31. Unless you have heard otherwise from your faculty with different instructions, on the first day of classes you should log into your MyCLU portal and navigate to your course through Blackboard. There you will find the link to access Zoom and to attend your class. If you have any difficulties logging into your classes you can contact Maria Kohnke at email@example.com.
Living on Campus
All on-campus housing will be offered in a private room format this semester. Student move in dates into the residence halls are on August 24-30. Space is still available for those who are interested in living on campus. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for details.
Labs and Studios. The state of California’s recently released guidelines allow a limited number of indoor specialized classes on campus such as labs and studio art. Some faculty teaching these classes have decided they want to meet with their classes in person on campus so we are carefully opening these spaces. You will be contacted if you are enrolled in a class that will meet in person. Students will be physically distanced and must wear masks.
Outdoor Classrooms. In-person instruction is now allowed outside so we are creating multiple outdoor classrooms. These are tented spaces equipped with all necessary resources, including technology. If you are enrolled in one of these classes, you will be contacted within the next week with the location of your class. Students will be physically distanced and must wear masks.
If your class is changed to one of these formats and you are unable to attend in person, you will still be able to attend virtually. If you want to attend virtually, please communicate about this with your faculty member directly.
Please note that the Bachelor’s Degree for Professionals and the Graduate School of Psychology will not be offering any classes in person.
Meeting with Faculty
Faculty at Cal Lutheran will be available virtually for office hours and advising appointments. Be sure to make contact with your faculty advisor and set up times to talk with them if you have questions about your classes, want advice about your future career plans, or just need a listening ear. Bachelor's Degree for Professionals students should continue to reach out to their academic counselors for academic advising and other needs.
Study & Wi-Fi Spaces
Once Ventura County has given permission, a number of spaces on campus will be available for students to study or to log into virtual classes. We know that distractions at home or challenges with internet access can make it difficult to study or attend classes virtually. To support you, we are preparing spaces at our Oxnard Center and in the library and student union on the Thousand Oaks campus where you can attend your classes with privacy and have access to the internet. Other study spaces will be available in outdoor tents. Once Los Angeles County gives us permission, we will open study space in our Westlake Village and Woodland Hills centers. A map of study spaces and outdoor classrooms will be available on the Cal Lutheran website next week. Operating hours are as follows:
Starting on August 31, the library will be open for study space:
- Monday through Thursday from 7:45 am to 10:00 pm
- Friday from 7:45 am to 5:00 pm
- Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Starting on August 31, the Oxnard Center (2201 Outlet Center Drive, Suite 600) will be open:
- Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm
- Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
- Saturday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
- Closed on Sunday
With the move to virtual classes, we realize that you may encounter some technology needs. If you have not notified us yet of your concerns, please complete the Student Technology Needs Survey so our faculty and staff can better assist you and make sure you have what you need to be successful.
Opening Convocation & New Student Welcome
This year our Opening Convocation will be held virtually on Friday, August 28, from 1-2 pm. Mark your calendar to join us, along with our new president, Dr. Lori Varlotta, who will welcome you to the new academic year at Cal Lutheran! More information will be sent closer to the date with log in information.
Students are reminded that you must follow the Cal Lutheran Campus Compact, which requires wearing a mask and physically distancing whenever you are on any Cal Lutheran campus. If you have not signed the compact yet, please do so today.
We look forward to seeing you and welcoming you to the new year! If you have any questions about your classes, please contact email@example.com.
Best wishes for the start of the new year!
