2017 Ventura County Economic Forecast

The CERF Annual Forecast is the premiere business event in Ventura County each year. Join the CERF team as they discuss the 2017 Ventura County Economic Forecast publication, review their state and national forecasts, and discuss the economic policies of Donald Trump after one year. CERF Director Matthew Fienup and esteemed colleagues will also discuss the housing affordability crisis, its affects on the Ventura County economy, and creative solutions that hold particular promise for the region.

Speakers

Matthew Fienup: Matthew Fienup is Executive Director of the Center for Economic Research & Forecasting (CERF) and teaches graduate courses in econometrics, macroeconomics and environmental economics at California Lutheran University. Matthew is a UCSB Bren School trained researcher in environmental economics who specializes in land use, urban growth restriction, groundwater management and environmental markets. He is frequently sought to speak on the issues surrounding urban growth restriction and groundwater management policies as well as the general economic outlook for the nation, the state and the region.

John Krist: Since February 2008, John Krist has been the chief executive officer of the Farm Bureau of Ventura County, the region’s oldest and largest agricultural association. As CEO, he is responsible for managing the nonprofit organization’s staff, daily operations and finances. Before joining the Farm Bureau, he was a journalist for more than 24 years, working as an editor, reporter and columnist for the Ventura County Star. His commentaries on land-use policy, natural resources and environmental issues have been published in numerous magazines and newspapers throughout the United States, including the Sacramento Bee, San Diego Union-Tribune, San Jose Mercury News, Denver Post and Seattle Times. Krist was the 1997 winner of the Pulliam Editorial Writing Fellowship, awarded by the Society of Professional Journalists, which supported his nationwide study of collaborative resolutions to conflict over natural resources and land use. His 1998 report on that research, “Seeking Common Ground,” won a Best of the West Award in natural resources and environmental reporting, and received honorable mention in competition for the John B. Oakes Award for Distinguished Environmental Journalism, regarded in the profession as the Pulitzer Prize of environmental reporting. For his work on that project, he was recognized with an Environmental Leadership Award by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Billy Chun: Billy Chun serves as the Deputy Mayor of Economic Development for the city of Los Angeles and Mayor Eric Garcetti. Over an 18-year career, he has been involved in a broad range of economic development projects and investment deals in real estate and tech. Prior to joining the Mayor’s Office in 2013, Mr. Chun was Vice President at Capri Global, a private equity and investment manager with almost $4 billion of assets under management. He was responsible for sourcing and underwriting acquisitions, asset management and equity investment activities including origination, direct and joint venture investing. Prior to joining Capri, he was a Project Manager at the Community Redevelopment Agency in the City of Los Angeles and was an analyst at CBRE’s consulting group. Chun holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Wesleyan University.
