(WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – Oct. 21, 2019) A nonprofit leader who has spent his career working to improve underprivileged communities will discuss his current work in Los Angeles at the California Lutheran University Corporate Leaders Breakfast Series in Woodland Hills.

Executive Director Joseph Collins will give a presentation on his organization, “C5LA: Creating Tomorrow’s Leaders,” on Friday, Nov. 8, at the Warner Center Marriott. Breakfast and networking will begin at 7:30 a.m. Collins’ talk will run from 8 to 9 a.m.

At C5LA, Collins works to help teens from under-resourced communities become leaders. C5LA was founded in 1999 by Coca-Cola Enterprises’ former president and CEO, who wanted underprivileged children to experience the development of personal skills, confidence and self-esteem that his children received through summer camp. C5LA grew from a four-week summer camp to a 5-year, year-round leadership development and college preparatory program.

Prior to joining C5LA, Collins served as president and CEO of Inner-City Arts in Los Angeles. A native New Yorker, he originally moved to Los Angeles to lead the Kanye West Foundation after founder Donda West died. As CEO, he organized Loop Dreams, a year-round music and education program that exposed inner city youth to the arts.

Collins spent his early career working for nonprofit agencies in New York City. At The Door – A Center of Alternatives, he organized programs dedicated to visual and performing arts and to career awareness for out-of-school youth. He also produced an intergenerational hip hop culture celebration and managed a yearlong arts and education initiative and multi-year summer residential community service project.

The breakfast series brings members of the business and civic communities together to hear from prominent leaders. The 2019-2020 schedule will continue with presentations by Santa Barbara legal expert Amy M. Steinfeld on the growing cannabis industry Jan. 30 in Santa Barbara, Limoneira President and CEO Harold Edwards on cultivating communities March 6 in Ventura, and Drew West of The Trade Desk on managing the digital advertising technology firm’s hypergrowth May 5 in Thousand Oaks.

Reservations are requested by Nov. 1. To RSVP, contact Sharon Nelson at smnelso@callutheran.edu. For more information, go to callutheran.edu/clb.
