Current and future school counselors, student life personnel, campus safety administrators and teachers will learn how to respond to critical incidents at the conference.

(THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – April 23, 2008) California Lutheran University will train counselors and others to respond to shootings and other violent situations on school campuses from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.

The recent shooting death of a student at an Oxnard middle school and the frequency of similar incidents at kindergarten through 12thgrade schools and college campuses throughout the country prompted CLU’s School of Education to offer “Responding to Critical Incidents in Educational Settings.”

Organizers invited candidates in CLU’s Counseling and Guidance Program, counselors already working in schools and college student affairs professionals. Some campus safety administrators and teachers will also participate.

In a morning session titled “Critical Incident Stress Management,” James Graves with Performance Management Associates will train all the participants to diffuse and debrief students. In the afternoon, K-12 counselors will receive training in Violent Intruder Police Educator Response from police facilitator Gene Bennett. Philip Mullendore, director of The Institute for Campus Safety and executive director of the California College and University Police Chiefs Association, will cover college safety and preparedness.

The conference will be held in the Lundring Events Center, located in the Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center on Olsen Road.
