CLU improves in SCIAC standings

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran men’s swimming and diving team won 10 of 16 events with 18 different student-athletes scoring as the Kingsmen defeated Occidental 180-117 today in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) dual meet.

As the only CLU athlete to win more than one event, freshman Zach Loza earned 27 individual points with three top swims, adding more points as part of a the winning 200 Free Relay team, joining forces with Chase Miller, Bryce Woodell and Tyler Berg to close out the meet with a one second win in a time of 1:30.01. Loza was victorious in the 500 free (4:59.02) as the only swimmer under five minutes, and in both the 200 free (1:48.85) and 100 free (48.77).

Berg won the shortest race of the day, the 50 free in 22.16, while Derrick Graham was the winner in the longest, pacing himself to a nearly 10 second victory in the 1,000 Free in 10:33.32. Anthony Nguyen was the fastest 200 Breaststroker, going a 2:19.45 and Michael Fernandez hit the wall first in the 400 Individual Medley (IM) by clocking a 4:23.96, which was close to 20 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

On the diving boards, Ryan Brem and Joey Zielsdorf swept the one- and three-meter competitions, scoring a 230.55 and 209.50, respectively for the top spot on the podium.

Philip Anderson, Luis Burgos, Patrick Gregory, Mason Hill, Zach Kaija, Andy Nguyen, Mike Potter, Kevin Schultz and Aaron Waters all contributed in the team victory as well.

Cal Lutheran (3-4) will return to the Samuelson Aquatics Center on Saturday, Feb. 8 for the final home meet of the season when the Kingsmen host Whittier at 10:30 a.m. Prior to the meet the senior class will be honored.
