SAN DIEGO, Calif. – What started as a muggy morning turned into a clear day at the par-72 Riverwalk Golf Course where the Cal Lutheran women’s golf team teed off for the first time of the spring. The Regals finished the opening round in 10th place with a 333 (+47) at the Point Loma Nazarene University Invitational.

Leading the way on the course, which was in great condition, was Danika Cochiolo whose 78 (+8) included a pair of birdies on the fourth and eighth holes. She sits in 20th place in the field of 94 after the opening 18 holes of action.

After the round Cochiolo said, “Overall it went really well. I was hitting all the greens in regulation and sinking a lot of lag putts.”

Using a two-over 38 on the back nine today, Jenna Gimbel finished second for the Violet and Gold by posting an 82 (+10).

McKay Weiler holds onto the third spot for CLU after using 85 strokes to complete the course this morning. Three swing back of Weiler is Hannah Purdy with a first round 88.

Rounding out the Regals today was Kelly Shotwell with a 97 (+25).

“As a team we shot well for the first round of the spring and have showed a huge improvement from last year” Cochiolo concluded, “We are all excited to see what this season has to bring.”

At the end of the first day, three players, Marvi Monsalve (Cal Baptist), Marian Fuller (Point Loma) and Courtney Shelton (Lady Flames) were tied atop the leaderboard as each shot a 75 (+3).

Host PLNU leads the team competition after day one with a 308 (+20).

Cal Lutheran will conclude the tournament tomorrow with tee times set for 7:30 a.m.
