(THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – April 28, 2017) California Lutheran University faculty members honored one of their own for her enthusiasm and dedication as a teacher and adviser.

Associate professor of mathematics Karrolyne Fogel received the 2017 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence at the Honors Convocation on April 25. The award was created in 1995 to recognize professors who are held in high esteem by their peers, students and the rest of the university community. A committee of past honorees selected her to receive the honor and $2,500.

Fogel joined the Cal Lutheran faculty in 1998. The Thousand Oaks resident teaches upper division electives for math majors as well as classes for non-majors. She also educates aspiring elementary school teachers in the Interdisciplinary Educational Studies program and serves as the director of the Mathematics Single Subject Program for those planning to become high school math teachers. She was the chair of the Mathematics Department for eight years.

In addition to serving as an academic adviser and mentor to math majors and minors, Fogel is adept at helping undeclared and transfer students identify and transition into fields of study.

Fogel’s background is in algebraic number theory and her current research is in graph labeling. She also enjoys the mathematics of voting, and has mentored student projects in that topic at Cal Lutheran and introduced the subject to local elementary school students.

She has served on the leadership team for the Pacific Coast Undergraduate Math Conference, which was recognized in 2015 by the American Mathematical Society as a Mathematics Program that Makes a Difference. She is currently a member of the governing board of the Southern California-Nevada section of the Mathematical Association of America.

Fogel received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Santa Clara University and her doctorate in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin. She spent several summers interning at the National Security Agency.
