Ballou, Worley Headed to NCAA's

CLU duo earns bid to play doubles, Ballou to play singles

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Yesterday the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced the field of men’s tennis singles and doubles qualifiers for the Tournament hosted in Cary, N.C. later this month. Nick Ballou will play singles while he and Ray Worley will team up for doubles action as well.

The brackets are composed of 32 individuals and 16 teams. Among the individuals selected is Ballou, last week’s SCIAC Athlete of the Week and the Ojai Singles champion. He finished the 2012 regular season with a 21-6 record in singles play.

He and Worley have teamed up 26 times, posting a 23-3 doubles record for the Kingsmen this spring to be invited as a doubles team.

Also punching tickets to North Carolina from the SCIAC in singles play are Warren Wood (CMS), Alex Lane (CMS), Tommy Meyer (PP) and Patrick Lipscomb (UR).

The 2011 individual champion, Chris Goodwin from Emory, returns to try and defend his title.

The doubles teams of Mark Bloom and Lipscomb from Redlands also earned a bid from the SCIAC.

Last spring the Bowdoin duo of Stephen Sullivan and Oscar Pena earned the doubles championship. Pena will team up with Sam King this year.

Cal Lutheran also earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament as a team. Competition in the West Regionals will begin today at 1:00 p.m. at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on the campus of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Kingsmen will face SCIAC foe Redlands at 1:00 p.m. Both live stats and video streaming will be available this afternoon.

The NCAA Division III National Championships for teams, individuals and doubles will be hosted by Meredith College and the Town of Cary at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. May 21-23.
